Kheer Bhawani: The Mystical Temple of Changing Colors
The revered Kheer Bhawani Temple, located in Tula Mula village near Srinagar, is one of Kashmir's most sacred Hindu shrines dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi. The temple's centerpiece is a miraculous spring whose waters are said to change color - from clear to black, red, or green - believed to foretell coming events. Devotees offer kheer (rice pudding) to the goddess, giving the temple its name.
Built within an octagonal spring, the temple complex features a beautiful marble structure surrounded by ancient Chinar trees and smaller shrines. The spring's waters remain icy cold even in peak summer, with its 360 sacred threads (mata ki moorat) visible beneath the surface. According to legend, the goddess appeared to Lord Rama here during his exile, and the site was rediscovered by a pious Brahmin in the 12th century.
The annual **Kheer Bhawani Mela** (May-June) attracts thousands of pilgrims when the water traditionally changes color. Visitors can witness unique rituals like the floating of offerings on lotus leaves and special night prayers. The surrounding gardens and walkways create a serene atmosphere for meditation.
Nearby attractions include the **Tula Mula Apple Orchards** and the historic **Shankaracharya Temple**. The temple's peaceful environment and spiritual significance make it a must-visit for both pilgrims and cultural travelers exploring Kashmir's religious heritage.
